Incidence

While prevalence is an important figure to have in mind, perhaps of greater interest is incidence. This is essential in allocating risk to individuals over time, all other factors being equal (in reality, an impossible requirement). Although several groups addressed the question of incidence with older drugs (Gibson, 1981; Kane et al., 1982; Yassa and Nair, 1984; Chouinard et al., 1986; Gardos et al., 1988b; Waddington et al., 1990), as Table 6.6 illustrates, figures again varied, no doubt on the basis of heterogeneous sampling and methodology, sample sizes and variable (and relatively short) follow-up intervals.
